Client name: TDK Corporation
Project value: $2.3 million
Contract period: 8 months
Background and scope
TDK Corporation is a locally owned and run building construction company. They approached Simpson Earth, having recognised our success on projects requiring hard rock removal and detailed excavation.
The new developer for the project had changed the footprint of the previous excavation to expand the boundary line of the original design. In contrast to the standard procedure of excavating from the top down, the boundary footprint needed to be excavated from the bottom up. This demanded expert knowledge and experience to develop a new approach and successfully complete the project to plan.
To complete this project, we needed to minimise vibrations, noise and dust. Our approach involved using our rock saws to cut and rip along the boundary of the neighbouring building to reduce the impact of noise and vibration. Saw cutting of the remaining walls 2.7m deep and 10m high was carried out in 2.5m wide sections to allow continual shot-creating and support anchoring. The bulk and detailed excavation work was all carried out in 130 mpa blue rock. We utilised a range of excavators from 8 to 70 tons with specialised attachments to successfully complete the project.
Signature Wollongong now stands as the tallest landmark building in the Illawarra, measuring 75m above the city’s skyline.
